Care & Maintenance

Welcome to our guide on the proper care and maintenance of your Pirates Patch. Your Pirates Patch is made from high quality top-grain leather that is waxed, oiled and hot-stuffed. The type of wax used in the production of the leather hides gives it a waxy matte “pull-up” effect, which helps with resistance against surface scratches while also giving it a unique, sought-after look and pattern. Blemishes or minor scratches can simply be rubbed out using your fingers! Or, leave it as is to create character. Create a unique pattern in the leather simply by folding or creasing it. The leather will also develop a natural patina over time as it ages. This type of leather is prized for its durability and natural, rugged appearance, but it also requires specific care to ensure it remains in excellent condition. It is very important to please follow and understand the below steps PRIOR TO using your Pirates Patch in order to keep it looking its best, and to avoid possible common leather-related issues such as discoloration and water damage.

1. General Cleaning Guidelines

1.1 Regular Wipedowns/Dusting

  • Frequency: Wipe or lightly dust your Pirates Patch regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt and grime, or the occasional piece of lint or debris. Failure to do this can possibly cause the debris to fall onto the optic window when the Pirates Patch is removed or relocated.
  • Method: Use a soft, dry cloth to remove surface debris. Light dusting can also be done with a cloth, or even an aerosol dusting can or compressed air. Avoid using abrasive materials that can scratch the leather.

1.2 Spot Cleaning

  • Method: For minor stains or spills, quickly (and gently) blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth. Try to avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain and damage the leather. If this method doesn’t work satisfactory, try moving to damping the cloth with a solution of warm soap and water, and gently rubbing the leather in small, light circles.
  • Cleaning Solution: If necessary, use a leather cleaner specifically acceptable for oil tanned leather (try warm soap and water first). Apply a small amount of cleaner to a damp cloth and gently wipe the stained area. Always test the cleaner on a discreet area first to ensure it doesn’t affect the leather’s color or finish.
  • Drying: Allow the leather to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

2. Conditioning

Although rarely required for this type of leather and its use, adding a conditioner helps to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out or becoming brittle. This can only become a possible issue in the case of the Pirates Patch, if frequently used in wet or dry conditions, or when bent excessively for extended periods of time.

  • Conditioner: Use a leather conditioner acceptable for oiled tanned leather.
  • Application: Apply the conditioner sparingly using a soft, clean cloth. Gently rub the conditioner into the leather in circular motions.
  • Frequency: Only on an as-needed basis, based on usage and exposure, or after a deep-cleaning was necessary to remove a stain, etc…

3. Protecting Against Water, Stains, & Sweat

3.1 Avoiding Moisture Damage

  • Usage: Avoid exposing your Pirates Patch to water or excessive moisture. Leather can absorb water, which may lead to staining, stiffness, or other damage. The waxy surface inherent in the Pirates Patch will help with repelling minor splashes and such if wiped up quickly, however, moisture and liquids can still migrate to the edges of the leather and get absorbed.
  • Precautions: Keep leather items away from rain and spills. If the leather gets wet, blot the moisture immediately with a clean, dry cloth and allow it to air dry in a well-ventilated area. We HIGHLY recommend treating your Pirates Patch with a waterproofing product prior to use, especially to avoid discoloration from sweat migration!

3.2 Waterproofing/Moistureproofing

  • Waterproofing Products: Use a waterproofing spray specifically formulated for leather. These products create a protective layer that repels water and other moisture, such as sweat.
  • Application: Apply the waterproofing spray in a well-ventilated area, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first. If satisfactory, apply the solution over all the leather parts, being sure to especially apply along the edges of the Pirates Patch, where there is far less protection from moisture absorption.
  • Frequency: Reapply the waterproofing treatment every 3 to 6 months or as recommended by the product manufacturer.

4. Preventing Oil Discoloration

4.1 Understanding Oil Migration

  • Nature of Oil Tanned Leather: Oil tanned leather contains natural oils that can migrate and potentially discolor other materials, especially if it is lighter-colored.
  • Preventive Measures:
    • Avoid placing your Pirates Patch directly against lighter-colored fabrics or surfaces for extended periods of time. Movement, heat, or moisture can exacerbate this migration.
    • Use protective covers or barriers if the leather will be in contact with other materials. Note that the “patch” on your Pirates Patch will help prevent any chances of oil migration around the firearm and optic. However, items like lighter-colored holsters may be at risk due to their prolonged contact.

4.2 Regular Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean your leather to maintain its quality and minimize oil migration. Proper cleaning may help to control excess oil on the surface.
  • Spot Testing: If you’re concerned about discoloration, perform a spot test on a small, hidden area of the item against the leather before using it.

5. Storage Tips

  • Environment: Store leather items in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can cause fading and drying.

6. Additional Tips

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the leather to fade and dry out.
  • Temperature Control: Keep leather items away from extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, to prevent damage.
  • Professional Care: For extensive damage or professional cleaning, consult a leather care specialist.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Pirates Patch will remain in excellent condition and continue to look its best for years to come. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us!
